Best answer:

Answer by Danajaan
1. d. monopoly profits can continue to exist in the long run, because the monopoly produces more and charges a higher price than a comparable perfectly competitive industry.

A monopoly produces less than a comparable perfectly competitive industry.

2. b. impose a price ceiling to eliminate any economic profit.
The government can’t break up a natural monopoly into smaller firms because of the large investment required, and since it’s a monopoly, a price floor makes little sense since the firm controls the price. A price ceiling makes sense to prevent the monopolist from overcharging consumers.

5. true

6. b. neither firm cheats on the agreement; Gary cheats on the agreement and Frank does not cheat.

All of the examples are of nonprice competition, which is a characteristic of monopolistic competition.

10. True

11. a. Bob is more risk-averse than Mary.

12. a. there will be too little pollution.
It may sound odd, but it means that at the equilibrium price, the marginal social benefit exceeds the marginal social cost.

13.a. when individuals take external costs and benefits into account in their decision making.

15. b. the supply and demand of permits
Tradeable means it’s determined by the market

17.b. pay per view of a boxing match
The tickets are limited by the capacity of the venue, but there is no limit on how many people can watch it on tv

18. b. taxes
Generally, they’re not provided privately

19. b. no excludable and nonrival in consumption

20. true

22. b. lack of education and poor proficiency in English
They all factor in somewhat, but b is the main one

23. c. ability-to-pay principle
Everybody pays the same amount, no matter how much money they have

24. b. revenue from the federal tax on gasoline is used to maintain and improve the Interstate Highway system.
The people who pay the taxes are the ones who receive the benefits

25. The first part is true, and the second part is true with regards to sales taxes

Question by TKW: National health insurance proposal?

Health insurance like any insurance such as home, or auto insurance should be a personal policy not job related. Insurance by traditional definition is a sharing of risk. Uninsured Americans should be grouped as to insurable but uninsured , higher risk, and poor.

The uninsured would be offered a pool by all insurance companies offering health insurance in the designated area as a last resort with premiums averaging those of offered by insurance companies in the state or bi state region. Higher risk would be pool insured also at a 10% higher premium. Poor or unemployed would be insured in a pool of the same insurance companies at heavily discounted premiums say 10% depending on assets.

All premiums would rise some but this program would provide an American infrastructure to keep Americans healthy and functioning, spread the risk among insurance companies, and eliminate the need for tribal clinics, va hospitals and clinics, and state and local government clinics . Eventuall

Best answer:

Answer by Christie
What’s your question, exactly?

If it was up to the individual to get their own, personal health insurance, even fewer people would have medical insurance. It is much, much, MUCH cheaper to purchase health insurance for people as a group than it is for people to purchase it individually. In many instances, the premiums that people are paying for employer-offered health insurance are only about half of the actual premium, because the employer is paying the other half. Sometimes the employer even pays MORE than half the premium.

People complain now about the high cost of insurance, but without their employer to share a portion of the premiums each month, the cost would be even higher.

I don’t have an answer for the uninsured and under-insured population in this country. Personally, I think that rather than ask insurance companies to “spread the risk”, hospitals and doctors and other medical service providers should offer special programs to those who don’t have coverage. The fact that the cost of medical care is so outrageous is the real problem. Anytime a single Tylenol tablet costs in a hospital, that should send a message – medical providers are grossly overcharging.

There is a large number of people in the US who are offered health insurance through their employer, but they elect not to take it because they think it’s “too expensive”. Many of those same people then get sick and run up major medical bills that they can’t pay. It would’ve made much better financial sense to have elected employer-offered medical coverage than to now be struggling to pay outrageous medical bills because they had no insurance.

People need to take responsibility for themselves. Everyone wants to blame the insurance companies for the fact that insurance premiums are high and so many Americans have medical bills that they can’t pay.

If your employer offers you medical coverage, TAKE IT! Anyone who has the chance to share the cost of medical insurance and chooses not to is ignorant. And their ignorance shouldn’t have to impact me, or other logical-thinking, responsible Americans, in any way.

What do you think? Answer below!

Question by Just Me: Will the liberal impulse to remove the consequences of reality for our citizens lead to an end of U.S. success?

Two Examples:

Example 1
————————–
In the 1970s & 80s many American labor unions (most notably UAW) tried to win a guarantee of wage increases that were immune to market fluctuations. Around that same time, Toyota and Honda plants offered profit sharing (i.e. wage increases that were tied to success and failure of business).

The strategy by the Union ultimately led to the continued marginalization of the whole American auto industry as the fixed cost from the wage increases eventually made the business model unsustainable.
——————————

Example 2
———————–
Over the early part of this decade liberals pressured banks to give mortgages and loans to people that banks were evaluating as bad risks. At the end of last year, the banks initial assumptions proved correct and there was a complete collapse of all markets that were contaminated by this toxic credit.
—————————–

Today liberals are pursuing a plan that will pressure healthcare insurance companies to provide service to people deemed to have pre-existing conditions that indicate the cost of their care will be prohibitively higher than most other consumers. But the plan congress is pursuing is to force these providers to spread the cost, pushing the burden over on to those who are satisfied with their current insurance. The expectation is that added cost will force all existing insurance customers over to a cheaper tax-subsidized plan run by the government. Once governemnt becomes a monopoly we will be stuck with an inferior single-payer healthcare plan that will have government dictating how much doctors can earn, how much a scientist who creates a new wonder drug will earn, and what services any particular consumer is eligible for.

Is the era of American Exceptionalism over? Will we be pressured by reckless politicians into being a second tier nation?

Best answer:

Answer by Eric
Your information is incorrect and not supported by fact, truth, logic and reality. I used to be like that, but now I just think and repeat what I am told to by Fox News, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and Sean Hannity. I am a TRUE PATRIOTIC CONservative!

Question by Barracuda: Is democracy on the decline in the world?

I can’t believe how out of control and stupid America is.

People need to be controlled and respect a consolidated, higher authority.

When Supreme Court cases decide whether or not a child murderer should go free because he wasn’t read his rights, and Congress debates the viability of the BCS Football system, you really have to wonder whether Democracy is a total failure. The lawyers control the country, and common sense has been thrown out the window because of the lawsuit frenzy that has engulfed America. Schools are out of control, our kids are dumb shits, and the adults are dumb shits as well. We are gradually losing our prominence in the world worrying about whether or not torturing terrorists is acceptable, because we actually have to listen to the idiots that oppose it. We are becoming a nation of idiots, full of people who think their voice matters as much as any world leader or academic.

Is it time for the people to lose their voice and follow one man as their leader, without question?

Call dictatorships or monarchies primitive all you want, they work. Most businesses are dictatorships. So if that is so primitive, why aren’t most businesses democracies?

Maybe the closest thing to an answer you have is the auto companies, where the laborers get paid 50-100K a year to put together cars and have lifetime health insurance that ultimately screws up the company down the road? Hey, I wouldn’t mind for these guys to get paid well, but there’s getting paid well, and getting paid like a king, AND STILL BITCHING ABOUT IT.

America is getting that way. Everyone thinks the 1st Amendment and sketchy lawyers gives them the right to act like a brat, demand to be lazy and impose their moral-less ways on everyone else. It’s comfort over country.

If things keep declining like they are now, I fully predict America, and many other countries around the world will turn into dictatorships.

The Constitution and Bill of Rights were intended to look out for the rights and welfare of individuals so we could live a better life. What we are seeing now is that over time, free individuals abuse their rights and put their own society at risk. People simply cannot be trusted to rule themselves.
What the hell do Jewish people have to do with this?

Hitler was a dictator, but that does not mean a dictator is an anti-Semite, automatically.

Use logic.

Best answer:

Answer by Hushyanoize
liberals cannot rule themselves. conservatives handle this quite well.

What do you think? Answer below!

Question by Desmoulins: Which car do you think would be the best to sign for my 17 year old sisters to get?

I asked this question yesterday & did get a few good responses but, a few responses that didn’t quite fit due to apparently more information being needed. A few mentioned my sisters as “first time drivers”. They are not. They have been driving since they were 13 (farm equipement @ my Uncle’s & my dad’s friend owns a track on which they have both driven a Hemi Roadrunner, a 1970 Chevy Nova, etc on countless occasions so they are not unfamiliar with muscle at all. They also have had their licenses since the day they turned 16. Another person stated that they thought my sisters were selfish to ask for these. I proposed this whole thing, not them, on the basis that they came up with the money & recieved straight A’s through Junior High & high school & they have. Also, they are far from selfish. They do all the yard work on 23 Acres because for the past 5 years, my father has not been able to because of a heart attack. They come clean my house & take care of my dogs if I get stuck @ work or my fiance & I go on vacation without even needing to be asked. They also volunteer @ local soup kitchens. You couldn’t ask for better siblings & they are the definition of unselfish. As far as insurance is concerned, that is covered for them for the first year by myself & my father & they will be listed as secondary drivers under me so the cost is not all that bad. Another person noted that whenever he was writing up auto loans he would purposefully deny teenagers even with co-signers & that many others do too. I am not co-signing, the car will be in my name completely & yes I know the risks of this but, if they can’t pay, I have it. A few people mentioned that they should sell their trade & just find a car for 12k but, the problem with that is, it wouldn’t have the premium warranty I want for them (unless u were to pay over 2 grand more for the extended which still may not cover everything & would not last as long as I want it to). Our family is very, very busy & don’t really have the time to take them somewhere should they have to wait for a car to be fixed. With the new cars I’ve selected, all the warranties state that if the car goes in for any repair, a rental is provided free of charge & are full bumper-to-bumper warranties. So, with new information provided i would like some feedback to the question:

For my sisters’ Senior year, I asked that they come up with 5k by the end of summer & they came up with 8k for me to sign for a new car for them. Their trade is worth 4500 & with all that as a down payment, these are the cars they have narrowed it down to: A 2010 VW Tiguan that will cost them like 3 a month but it’s LOADED! Bike rack, heated seats & steering wheel, u name it, plus their oil changes, inspection & emissions would be free for the life of the car. A 2010 Mazda3 grand touring 5 door that will cost them like 6 a month & I know that’s not all-wheel or 4 wheel like I wanted them to have but my fiance has one that’s a couple years older & it goes great in snow so I guess I’m okay with that. There’s a 2010 Dodge Nitro we looked at before that will be 6 a month (actually less cuz we didn’t calculate their trade in when we looked). Another we looked at was a new Subaru WRX-STI that’s all-wheel, loaded & would be about 0/month. There was also a Mercedes 2009 M-Class we found that was a demo for a salesman & only has 15k miles, it’s all-wheel & loaded, even heated seats & steering wheel & I can get 0% financing on it, the payments will be slightly higher (3 a month) but I kinda saw their eyes light up when we looked at that. Plus with the payment split in half & that being the only bill they would have other than car insurance. (Dad pays cell bill) They still want to look at a new Pathfinder cuz they love mine but I think I might get jealous if they had a newer one than me, lol. And of course, they both are REALLY trying to talk me into the Dodge Challenger SRT-8 that would cost 0/month that we test drove just for fun but, now they want it. I know they could afford to split the payment on it & my father & I are covering the first 12 months of insurance. All have full warranties until the loan would be paid off. I’m a lil worried about the Challenger cuz I don’t want them to wreck in the snow. (We live in PA) What do you guys think? Also, today we looked at a new Cadillac SRX, A Nissan Rogue, & a Jeep Compass. The SRX is 1 a month, the Rogue & the compass are both about 9 a month.

Best answer:

Answer by Sophie B
I didn’t read all that.. From what I got they both have been driving for a while…

If they are paying for the car, they should buy what they can afford…

If you are paying, they should pick the one they like best….

Question by Pilgrim: How is AIDS funding different than the stimulus package. In both cases, people made bad decisions.?

AIG and GM (Government Motors) ran their businesses badly and are looking to government to bail them out. They want guys like me who make less than 100k a year to provide them salaries of 500m. NO!

How is that different than homosexual promiscuity spreading AIDS.

Nobody knows when an auto accident will happen, so we buy insurance just in case.

Promiscuous homosexuals are pretty certain they’ll eventually get the gift that keeps on giving. Perhaps they should buy insurance before they make that DECISION.

If no insurer will offer AIDS coverage, perhaps the risk isn’t worth it.

BUT WHY SHOULD I PAY FOR THEIR BAD JUDGMENT THROUGH HIGHER TAXES?

Please tell me.
tonalc2:
And why did all these innocent people contract AIDS?
BECAUSE IT WAS SPREAD THROUGHOUT SOCIETY BY HOMOSEXUALS.
Why aren’t homosexuals with AIDS quarantined?
Besides, homosexuals constitute the vast majority of AIDS victims. Children, health workers and other ‘innocents’ constitute less than 1%.

Best answer:

Answer by honeyducote
Not only that, our esteemed president want us to buy more cars so we can bail them out twice.

Question by Mike: Denied for credit card…what does it mean?

I checked my credit report last week on equifax and saw that my score was 739. Last month I consolidated a ,000 loan at a rate of 29% into a ,000 loan at a rate of 11.5%(payment is 8). I also have a student line of credit (now inactive) for ,000 with a balance of ,500 (rate is 5.75, min payment is ). I have a mastercard with limit of 00 and a balance of . I have another inactive visa on my report with a balance of -.

I was looking to get a new visa in order to benefit from the air miles, insurance, and other benefits that my active mastercard does not have. The adviser at the bank figured that I would be ok to apply since I make ,000 and have no current mortgage or rent payment (I don’t own a house though or other assets though).

She put the application in on Friday and it came back declined today. The stated reason was that “client has a new consolidation loan, and trades are high. Client also is without savings”. that’s the extent of what it said.

My adviser was a little surprised but told me that she could check with her manager as sometimes they can vouch for a clients low risk status. I told her that I just wanted to know what I should do to improve my credit worthiness. She’s checking with the manager and will get back to me in a few days.

I’m in need of a new car. Does this mean that I would not qualify for an auto loan at this point? What is my best course of action to improve my situation?

Thanks.

Mike

Best answer:

Answer by Fuzzy
t all depends on your debt to income ratio. Check that out and you will be better informed on your situation.

Question by dolphin314etc: Are these Fair Rules For Health Insurors?

1. You do not have to write a policy for anybody you don’t want to write a policy for. You get to decide who you want to insure. If someone has a pre-existing condition, and you don’t want to insure them, so be it, that’s your call.

2. If you do insure someone’s health, and they lose their health, you are responsible to step up and pay to the policy limits as they require such payments to restore their health or palliate their sufferring. You cannot wiggle out of making the payments or your license to write and sell health insurance will be withdrawn, and you will be closed.

3. If you are insuring a client for a given period, like a year, and they get sick during the time they are covered for, you cannot kick them off of their insurance at the end of the year just because they are sick. That’s not a pre-existing condition — it’s a condition that arose after the policy was validly in force. It’s part of the risk you bargained to take on.

4. You also can’t jack their premiums up sky high just because they got sick while your policy was covering them. You may raise all the premiums for all the people in their insurance group or cohort of insureds. You may raise the sick person’s premiums slightly more than the rest of the group. So if everyone in the group gets hit with a 10% rise, you can put a 20% rise on the sick persons. Just like auto insurors can put a small rise on your auto policy if you have an accident. This is called experience rating the premiums but it must be done with moderation in the individual cases, and proportionality in the cohorts or groups. It can’t be done in a way that is predatory or gouging or that amounts to kicking them off their insurance. You bargain for the risk freely, but then you pay out honestly, and stick by the client loyally.

5. Compensation for executives at health insurance companies cannot be tied to net profits per year or per quarter. To allow this is to allow a direct conflict of interests between the insured clients and the decision making executives. The executives can gouge the clients to get bigger bonuses for themselves.
So executive bonuses, if they are allowed at all, should be for other aspects of company performance such as innovations successfully brought into existence, or perhaps morale among company employees, or perhaps satisfaction among insured clients, or perhaps vote of confidence by the doctors working with the company as providers — there are 100 possibilities — only one is prohibited — you can’t get bonuses tied to profits because to allow that is to allow you to gouge your bonus out of patient care — high profits can always be achieved by providing lowest possible cost care, and that’s not what insured clients bargained for when they signed a policy with you. They wanted the ordinary standard of care that doctors in USA provide — not the cheapest possible care that you could dream up to get your million bonus check.

Best answer:

Answer by John H
Everything sounds about right except for #5. That just ain’t gonna fly. There are absolutely ZERO politicians who would back a law that included that one.
