Senate bill fines people refusing health coverage

WASHINGTON – Americans who refuse to buy affordable medical coverage could be hit with fines of more than ,000 under a health care overhaul bill unveiled Thursday by key Senate Democrats looking to fulfill President Barack Obama’s top domestic priority.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated the fines will raise around billion over 10 years. Senate aides said the penalties would be modeled on the approach taken by Massachusetts, which now imposes a fine of about ,000 a year on individuals who refuse to get coverage. Under the federal legislation, families would pay higher penalties than individuals.

In a revamped health care system envisioned by lawmakers, people would be required to carry health insurance just like motorists must get auto coverage now. The government would provide subsidies for the poor and many middle-class families, but those who still refuse to sign up would face penalties.

Called “shared responsibility payments,” the fines would be set at least half the cost of basic medical coverage, according to the legislation.

I’m currently a college student and would like to purchase my own auto insurance in Ohio (and no longer be included on my parents insurance). Does anyone have any tips on how/where to get good, affordable auto insurance? Are there any companies that you would recommend? Or ones that offer student/good student discounts?

There are dozens of companies that love to write high risk drivers; just look in the Yellow Pages for the big billboard ads. What you consider affordable, though, is a matter of opinion. All you can do is ask them for premium quotes.

hi there, i plan on buying a car soon but im a new driver and i have no one else to help me insure a car so i have no choice but to insure it on my own. I’ve checked and looked around geico, state farm, all state, and they were all to expensive, anywhere from 5-6k to insure the car for a year (way to expensive). So do any of you guys know any NY auto insurance companies that are affordable? Thanks

The only way to buy insurance is to shop and compare rates. the cheapest insurance company for me may be the most expensive for you. it is too personal and there are too many variables.

Hi everyone. I am shopping for car insurance and want to know the best but most affordable out there. My mother thought to put me on her policy with Progressive and I would pay her for the insurance, but they were going to charge her over 0.00 to do so. My friend has gotten into two accidents and hasn’t had to pay nearly that much , and neither did her dad when he put her on his policy.

I just got my license a few weeks ago and my mom cant add me to the insurance because we dont have the money to. we have 3 cars, and 4 names on 2 and 3 names one 1, and it think its a hole in the wall company that were with.

What i want to know is that is there an affordable insurance company we can switch over to and add me to the cars and still have it be affordable?

Your Mom must specifically exclude you from her insurance if she “can’t afford” a higher premium. She must do this ASAP. If she doesn’t her premium will automatically be raised simply because you now have your license. Read the rules for “households” and drivers and insurance below:

Insurance companies want to know about all licensed household members (it does not matter if they are young or old) so they can calculate their potential risks for having you and these drivers covered by your insurance policy. When you purchase liability insurance (which every auto insurance policy has), there is a law that < REQUIRES > insurance companies to cover all household members who have a drivers license. Most all insurance companies will require that you either add licensed household members to the policy or exclude them. This is because as household members it is assumed they have access to your vehicles and may drive them at any time. These drivers are thus a risk/rating factor to be taken into consideration.
Many state laws require it, and your policy contract has in it terms that say you must inform them of licensed drivers dwelling in your household, so that they can add him as a driver to your policy and rate accordingly or exclude him. Excluding anyone from your car insurance would mean that you are not paying extra on your policy to have him/her as a driver and thus they are not extended any coverage by your insurance policy if they were to drive your car and be in an accident, even if it were an emergency situation.
So most insurance companies will require you to place the non-relative household member on your insurance policy as a driver if he is licensed. All licensed household members are normally required to be listed as a driver or excluded on an auto insurance policy by the insurance provider.
If you have a licensed household member, whether a relative, roommate, etc, the insurer believes that the person will have access to your vehicle and thus is a rating factor that should be on your insurance policy. If the person really is not going to drive the insured vehicle then there should not be an issue with excluding them. Without you signing off on the exclusion the insurance company cannot really believe that a licensed household member may not drive your car.
State laws differ however. Typically, insurance companies are allowed to use classifications that reflect a possible exposure for liability on the part of the insurer, in the event that bodily injury or property damage occurs due to the operation of the vehicle by anyone in your household.
The perceived risk for non-household members by an insurance company is different and that is why you can normally let a friend that does not live with you borrow your vehicle without adding him or her to your policy.
A friend may occasionally borrow your car and be covered by your insurance because they do not have regular access to your car and thus are not rated as a risk factor on your policy. If you do have someone outside of the household that regularly drives your car then normally an insurance carrier usually would also want this person listed an occasional driver so they would be properly covered in an accident.

I would suggest Progressive, I just switched to them from Esurance and my premium is about half of what it was with Esurance, and the coverage is the same, even a little better in some categories. The fact you are a new driver will not hurt you, if anything, it will HELP you, since you will not have any violations that will up the price of your insurance. In addition to this, you are 26, most isurance dropas at age 25, so you should find a decend price, I would suggest checking out Progressive. But whatever you do, shop around a bit.

No. You are a bad driver and shall be punished for it by having high premiums. Why should I subsidize your poor driving habits? You can either improve your driving and take responsibility for your actions, or you can be penalized with high rates. That is how society works.
